The Institute for Space–Earth Environmental Research (ISEE), Nagoya University, Japan, was certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) on October 29, 2021 as a core research institute of space–earth environment science, a “Joint Usage/Research Center” of national universities for the fourth medium-term target and planning period (fiscal years 2022–2027). The ISEE has been promoting research on the space–earth environment to clarify the mechanisms and relationships among the earth, sun, and cosmic space, treating them as a seamless system to contribute to solving issues related to the global environment and human society spreading in space. In the fourth period, we will continue to strengthen the activities linking space science and earth science to establish an international joint research center that aims to develop related communities and cultivate new interdisciplinary sciences. To this end, we will conduct joint usage/research using ground, ocean, aircraft, and satellite observations, laboratory experiments, data analysis, numerical simulations under programs for general and international joint research. We will also conduct research meetings, international symposiums and workshops, joint research with invited foreign researchers, research and travel support programs for graduate students, joint research with computing infrastructure, database management, and accelerator mass spectrometry analysis. Through this comprehensive research, we will contribute to solving issues related to global warming, extreme weather disasters (such as typhoons and torrential rains), and space weather disasters for satellites, communications, positioning, electric power, and aviation systems.
