Dr. Qidong Zhou (周啓東), who received his PhD in our group in 2018 and now works in the Belle II group of KEK, was awarded Young Scientist Award of the Physical Society of Japan.

He has been working on the LHCf experiment to study forward particles produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and to understand the hadronic interaction of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. He led the joint analysis of the LHCf and ATLAS experiments and finally succeeded to selectively study very-high-energy gamma rays only from the diffractive scattering process. His research results were published as his PhD thesis entitled “Study of contributions of diffractive processes to forward neutral particle production in p–p collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS-LHCf detector.”

At the 74th Annual Meeting of the Physical Society of Japan on Mar 15, 2019, he was awarded and gave a special lecture on his PhD research topics.
